I’ve been around the home gym scene for a long time now and I’ve seen a lot of pivots and fads come and go. Recently, there’s been a push for 5ft gym rods, with some claiming that these shorter bars offer improved control and are better suited for compact home spaces. I’m not convinced.
What I’m wondering is: are these shorter bars really a game changer, or is it just clever marketing trying to convince us to replace tried and true equipment? For example, a 5ft bar might seem convenient for limited space, but could it compromise performance or safety during heavy lifts? Has anyone actually swapped out their standard rod for a 5ft version long-term, and if so, what differences have you noticed in terms of torque, stability, and overall handling during compound lifts like squats and deadlifts?
I’m skeptical of anything that shakes up a concept that’s worked well for decades. I’d like to hear from those who have gotten practical, real-world experience with a 5ft rod. Is it really as versatile and effective as proponents claim, or just an overhyped novelty?
